The reader’s problem
A long code is difficult to use when the only route is scrolling through the whole document.
What changed
Early article navigation gave readers a way to open a text at a numbered provision. Principal codes also received their own entry points, so a familiar code name could lead to the underlying legal record.
Using the feature
Use the codes list to choose a text, then its outline or article links to reach the provision. Keeping the article attached to its parent text preserves the title, publication information and amendment context that a copied paragraph can lose.
Reading the evidence
Article numbering has legal significance. A repeated or sub-numbered provision is not interchangeable with the plain number beside it. Later search and address improvements extended this navigation while keeping distinct provisions separate.
