What does the Lebanese Code of Commerce say about who is a merchant, registration, companies, cheques and bills of exchange, and bankruptcy?

Last checked 21 October 2026

The law is the Arabic text quoted on this page: it is official and more accurate. This English explanation is an unofficial aid to find and read it, and where the two differ, the Arabic governs.

A merchant is a person whose profession is commercial acts or a company with a commercial object; petty traders are exempt from book duties. A merchant registers within 1 month and keeps books for 10 years; digital book-keeping becomes compulsory 2 years after Law 126 of 2019. A cheque is payable on sight and, if issued in Lebanon, presented within 8 days; a merchant who stops paying commercial debts is bankrupt.
