What does Lebanese law say about owning, carrying and selling weapons and ammunition, and what are the penalties (Article 72)?

Last checked 21 October 2026

The law is the Arabic text quoted on this page: it is official and more accurate. This English explanation is an unofficial aid to find and read it, and where the two differ, the Arabic governs.

Under Legislative Decree 137 of 1959, category 4 weapons (including all rifled firearms) and category 5 hunting guns need a licence, categories 1 and 2 get none outside the cases in Article 25, and a weapon may be sold only to a buyer whose licence allows it. Making, disposing of, buying, importing or stealing category 1 to 4 weapons without a licence carries 6 months to 3 years in prison and a fine of 1,000 to 5,000 LBP, or either. Unlicensed transport carries 6 months to 2 years, and these cases go to the military court.
