A person is Lebanese if born to a Lebanese father, or born in Lebanon to unknown parents or without a proven foreign nationality by descent. A Lebanese mother passes nationality on only in narrow cases, such as a child born outside marriage whose tie to her is proved first. A foreign wife of a Lebanese man becomes Lebanese on request 1 year after the marriage is registered, with no exception for Palestinians and no such route for a foreign husband.

Under Article 2, a child born outside marriage whose parentage is proved while a minor takes Lebanese nationality if the parent proved first is Lebanese. That parent can be the mother. If one deed or judgment proves both parents, the child takes the father's nationality if he is Lebanese.

How is Lebanese nationality lost?
Under Article 1 of the law of 31 January 1946, a Lebanese who takes a foreign nationality after authorisation by decree loses Lebanese nationality. So does one who accepts a post in Lebanon from a foreign government or its agency without prior authorisation. Silence on a request for that authorisation for 2 months counts as refusal.
A Lebanese by naturalisation also loses nationality after a conviction for a crime against State security. Membership of an association that plotted against State security, or of a dissolved or unlicensed political one, counts too. So do 5 consecutive years away from Lebanon. Loss under Article 1 is by Council of Ministers decree on the Interior Minister's proposal.
