Who inherits and how much under Lebanese law, for non-Muslims and for Sunni and Jaafari Muslims, and how much can a person leave by will?

Last checked 21 October 2026

The law is the Arabic text quoted on this page: it is official and more accurate. This English explanation is an unofficial aid to find and read it, and where the two differ, the Arabic governs.

For non-Muslims, the 1959 inheritance law applies: children inherit equally whatever their sex, the parents take one sixth beside them, the spouse takes one quarter, and a will cannot cut into the reserved shares, which are 50% for descendants alone. For Muslims, the inheritance text for Muslims gives a husband one half or one quarter and a wife one quarter or one eighth, a son inheriting with his sister takes twice her share, and a will may leave a non-heir one third without the heirs' approval. The Jaafari book differs: a lone daughter takes the whole estate.
